The autumn term got off to a grand start for the Scouts with a weekend hiking round Llangollen and Chirk.

Friday evening was spent settling into Chirk Scout & Guide bunk house and planning the route for the following days hike.
Saturday morning saw Scouts & Leaders at the bus stop for the short trip to Llangollen ready for the hike back. Highlights of the hike included a scramble around the ruins of Castle Dinas and the world famous Pontysilliac Aqueduct. Back at the bunk house out came the trangias, (camp cooking stoves) to cook a well earned tea. Pots washed, a game or two and back to route planning for part 2 of the weekend’s hike on Sunday.
No buses this time so rucksacks packed we headed off to walk over Chirk Aqueduct via the long tunnel and continued walking along the canal for a while. Cutting across the fields gave a different view of the aqueduct before climbing up to Chirk Castle to explore the castle and have lunch in the grounds. A volunteer there gave us a special welcome and talked about his Scout Troop.
October was welcomed in with a hill walk in the Roaches area. Glorious sunshine and incredible views across the fields and moorland made it a hike to remember. Woodland and the fantastic rock formation in the chasm called Lud’s Church with a lunch stop at Hanging Stone and its inscriptions added a lot of interest to the hill walk.
For one Scout the two events completed two activity badges: the Chirk weekend was the last activity needed for the Hikers Badge and the Roaches, the Hill Walkers Badges. Apart from the hikes and map reading, other skills include knowledge of first aid, (another badge) and leadership.
